Coconut Grove is a legendary Durban fast-food spot, iconic in the city’s nostalgia scene, especially tied to the Blue Lagoon area (also known as “Lugs” in local slang for the old hangout vibe).

It was founded on 15 December 1989 by Bob Moodley (a local legend) in a small shop in the undeveloped parking lot at Blue Lagoon. It quickly became a cult favorite for late-night eats, cruising culture, and Durban’s signature spicy Indian-style food. People remember cruising there on weekends, showing off cars, blasting music, and grabbing food after nights out—pure 80s/90s Durban magic. Many locals share stories of meeting partners there, epic Saturday nights, and the unbeatable atmosphere with thumping speakers and the sound of the lagoon/beach nearby.

Signature items included:

  • Jumbo spicy mutton burgers (often called some of the spiciest in SA, with legends of “extra hot” challenges)
  • Bunny chows (classic Durban curry in bread)
  • Chicken tikka, parathas, rotis, fish & chips, and other halal Indian-inspired grub
  • Later additions like beans curry and creative burgers (e.g., Mexican-inspired ones)

It was halal, family-run, and a cornerstone of Durban’s late-night food and youth culture for decades. There was drama around 2010 when it faced potential closure due to a legal wrangle with the city over the premises, and some sources mention it was shut down at the original Blue Lagoon spot at one point.

The brand lives on! Coconut Grove relocated/expanded (now with spots like in Umhlanga at 11 McCausland Crescent), and it’s still going strong with delivery (e.g., via Mr D), take-away, and the same fiery flavors. The Instagram (@coconutgroveza) and Facebook pages keep the “good old days” vibe alive, with posts evoking Blue Lagoon memories while serving new generations.

It’s a true piece of Durban heritage—much like Queen’s Tavern or other spots from the old days—symbolizing the city’s food, fun, and coastal hangout spirit.
