The tavern was packed with locals watching the football match.
The attackers demanded cash and cellphones from patrons.
They then opened fire indiscriminately. Witnesses described chaos, with people running for their lives. Some were shot for not handing over phones quickly enough or for phones that “didn’t meet standards.”
13 people were shot — 5 died at the scene or shortly after, and at least 7 others were injured (some critically).
Victims:
- Confirmed dead: Lindokuhle Malinga, Scelo Cele, and a man known as Thulani (among others).
- One survivor, Sisekelo Duba, is in critical condition with chest and kidney injuries.
Community members are shocked and angry, describing it as part of a broader crime wave in the area. One CPF member claimed 21 shooting deaths in the area in the past month alone. Residents feel unsafe and are calling on KZN Police Commissioner Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for stronger action. Police are investigating, and there are unconfirmed reports of community action against a suspect.
This is another heartbreaking example of the ongoing tavern violence and violent crime challenges in parts of Durban and KZN. Thoughts with the families and the injured. If you have local updates or this is close to home, stay safe out there.
