Amagwinya (also spelled amagwenya or magwinya; singular often igwinya or magwinya) are a beloved South African street food and everyday staple: deep-fried yeasted dough balls that are golden and crisp on the outside and soft, airy, and slightly chewy inside.
They are essentially the same as (or very closely related to) vetkoek (“fat cake” in Afrikaans). The name amagwinya comes from isiZulu/isiXhosa usage and is especially common in townships and among Nguni-language speakers.
They function as breakfast, snack, lunch, or quick meal on the go — cheap, filling, portable, and available from street vendors, taxi ranks, school gates, and home kitchens across the country.
