Iconic hotel on the city’s beachfront, particularly associated with the Golden Mile area.
The Beach Hotel was one of Durban’s classic beachfront establishments, dating back to the late 19th/early 20th century. Originally known as Oyster Lodge (built around 1863 with teak and corrugated iron), it underwent several makeovers and was rebuilt in the early 1960s. It stood prominently on the beachfront, near the bottom of West Street, and was a key part of Durban’s tourism heyday in the 1960s–1980s when the city was a top holiday destination.
It featured in the vibrant beachfront scene alongside nearby spots like the old Sea World/Aquarium (demolished in 2005). The hotel was known for its location facing the ocean, and it hosted guests during Durban’s peak era of seaside holidays.
Sadly, it closed down years ago—around 2019, it was reported as reaching the “end of the road” after a long history, with declining conditions noted by some former visitors. The site or building may have been repurposed, demolished, or integrated into modern developments, as no current operating hotel by that exact name appears prominently today.
