Zafiko Musik Festival (also spelled Zakifo Musik Festival) was a vibrant, eclectic live music event held in Durban, South Africa. It served as the South African sister/partner festival to the long-running Sakifo Musik Festival in Réunion Island (Indian Ocean).

Background and Concept

  • The name “Zafiko” (or “Zakifo”) draws from Réunion Creole, meaning “that’s what you need” or “enough” — echoing the original Sakifo’s idea of providing a full, satisfying music experience.
  • It focused on connecting Africa with the Indian Ocean islands, Europe, India, Australia, and beyond, featuring a diverse lineup of artists from the African diaspora and international scenes.
  • Genres included roots, reggae, indie, electronic, hip-hop, and more, blending local South African talent with global acts.

History in Durban

  • The festival launched around 2015–2016 with an initial showcase at Durban City Hall and later expanded.
  • Key editions took place in 2016 and 2017:
    • 2016: Held at sites including the old Natal Command (near Battery Beach) and other Durban venues.
    • 2017: Featured at Blue Lagoon Beach (26–28 May), with performances across outdoor spaces and smaller venues. Artists included international and African acts like Songhoy Blues, Moonchild Sanelly, The Brother Moves On, and many more.
  • It was praised for its diversity, beachfront vibes, and role in putting Durban on the map for unique music events (as an alternative to bigger festivals like Rocking the Daisies).

Current Status (as of 2026)

There are no recent announcements or active editions of Zafiko/Zakifo in Durban. It appears to have been active primarily in the mid-2010s and may not have continued annually or recently. The original Sakifo Musik Festival in Réunion remains very active — its 2026 edition is scheduled for 5–7 June in Saint-Pierre, with a strong lineup including Jean-Louis Aubert, PLK, Asaf Avidan, Magic System, and others.

If you’re looking for something similar today in the Durban/KZN area or broader South Africa, check out other regional festivals, or keep an eye on socials for any revival of Zakifo.
