Durban City Hall (also known as eThekwini City Hall) is a historic landmark in the heart of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Key Facts

  • Architect: Stanley G. Hudson (of Scott, Woolocott & Hudson).
  • Construction: Built between 1906 and 1910 (commissioned in 1903).
  • Style: Edwardian Neo-Baroque (often described as flamboyant or bold neo-Baroque), almost an exact replica of Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland.
  • Notable Features:
    • Prominent central copper dome (rising to about 48m) with four smaller domes.
    • Allegorical sculptures on the façades representing arts, music, literature, commerce, and industry.
    • Main pediment sculptures symbolizing unity, patriotism, and Britain (reflecting Natal’s history as part of the British Empire).
    • Impressive interior with wooden flooring, stained-glass windows, wrought-iron balustrades, marble pillars, and arches.

It was built to replace the original town hall (now the Durban Post Office across the road) due to the city’s rapid growth in the early 20th century.
