Two men in their thirties were shot and killed in a suspected drive-by shooting on the M1 Higginson Highway in Chatsworth, south of Durban, on Saturday night (18 April 2026).
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, emergency services responded around 9:30 pm near the Unit 5/RK Khan Hospital off-ramp. SAPS were already on scene when paramedics arrived. The victims were inside a breakdown/tow truck vehicle. Witnesses reported that another vehicle pulled up alongside, and gunmen opened fire before fleeing. Both men sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene. No further medical intervention was possible.
The motive remains unclear at this stage, and KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating. The incident has been described as a targeted attack in some reports.
This adds to a recent pattern of highway shootings in the greater Durban area, including other incidents on the M1 Higginson Highway in nearby areas like Mariannhill. Local residents and authorities have expressed concern over the spike in drive-by and targeted violence in KZN.
No arrests have been reported yet, and the highway section was cordoned off for forensic investigation.
