Tollgate Bridge (also called Toll Gate Bridge) is a well-known landmark and road bridge in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
It is located in the Berea area, spanning Berea Road and the Western Freeway (part of the N3 approach into Durban CBD). It’s a major intersection/bridge as you head into central Durban from the N3.
History
- In 1866, Durban established its first toll gate on Berea Road to recover costs from upgrading the rough road into the city (used by ox-wagons).
- Pedestrians passed free, but vehicles and animals were charged.
- The toll gate and house were demolished in 1901 when the toll law expired.
- A bridge was later built in the same area, and locals continued calling it Tollgate Bridge.
Current Status
- It is a concrete arch bridge and a prominent Durban landmark.
- It carries significant traffic flowing into and out of the city centre.
- Not a toll road today — there are no toll fees here (the name is purely historical).
