Case Background

The case involves the murders of:

  • Thamsanqa Gcabashe (ANC Youth League secretary in the area).
  • Lindokuhle Madonsela (Durban Metro Police officer and ANC member).
  • Ndumiso Thusi (Durban Metro Police officer).

The killings occurred in Mpumalanga township, Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal:

  • Gcabashe was shot at his home on 25 May 2020 (allegedly mistaken identity).
  • Two weeks later, on 9 June 2020, Madonsela and Thusi were gunned down in a silver Kia Rio while heading to work. A Toyota Etios pulled alongside and opened fire.

Accused

The five men charged are:

  • Fana Shabalala
  • Thulani Shozi (the one currently facing representation issues)
  • Zamokuhle Mnyandu
  • Sandile Msezane
  • Ntando Blose

They are alleged to have been hired as contract killers, initially targeting Madonsela. Shozi is accused of providing information on the victim’s movements.

Recent Court Developments (June 2026)

  • The matter is being heard in the Durban High Court.
  • Earlier this week, lawyer X Ntshulwana withdrew as Thulani Shozi’s legal representative due to non-payment/insufficient funds.
  • Judge President Thoba Poyo-Dlwati granted the withdrawal but stressed that the case (now in 2026) must be finalised without further delays.
  • Shozi indicated Ntshulwana would assist temporarily while he consults his family.
  • The judge ordered Shozi to return to court before 23 July 2026 to confirm new representation. If not, he must apply for Legal Aid.

All accused are out on bail except Ntando Blose. A further pre-trial conference is set for 23 July 2026. The trial was previously slated for 2026.
