The Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks (uMhlanga), KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is an iconic beachfront luxury hotel that opened in December 1964.

It was the first five-star hotel in South Africa (and the first in KwaZulu-Natal to achieve that status). It was built by entrepreneur Sol Kerzner (often called the father of modern hospitality in South Africa) as his inaugural luxury hotel project. It was named after his daughter, Beverly.

Key Historical Details

  • Origins and Development: At the time, Umhlanga was a quieter coastal area north of Durban. Kerzner (then in his late 20s) developed the hotel with the ambition of attracting international celebrities and setting a new standard for luxury in the country. It quickly became a landmark and pioneer in the region’s tourism.
  • Early Celebrity Appeal: The hotel succeeded in drawing high-profile guests from the start. Early visitors included entertainers like Maurice Chevalier and Marlene Dietrich. Over the decades, it hosted royalty, heads of state, Hollywood stars (e.g., Sigourney Weaver), musicians (e.g., Cliff Richard, Matt Monro, Snoop Lion/Lil Wayne), sports teams (including Manchester United and the Greek squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup), and members of the Zulu royal family.
  • Ownership and Evolution: It started under Kerzner’s involvement and later became part of the Southern Sun/Tsogo Sun portfolio. It has undergone renovations and updates over the years while retaining its classic, ocean-facing design (all rooms overlook the Indian Ocean). It features signature elements like its pool terrace, cabanas, and restaurants (e.g., The Sugar Club).

Significance

The Beverly Hills helped put Umhlanga on the map as a luxury destination and marked the beginning of Kerzner’s expansive career in hospitality (which later included major projects like Sun City). It is often described as the “grande dame” of KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast and celebrated milestones like its 50th anniversary in 2014.
