From 1 July 2026, it is now mandatory for all travellers (including South African citizens, residents, and foreigners) entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea, or rail to submit an online Traveller Declaration before travelling.

This replaces the previous voluntary pilot phase and modernises customs processes through the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS).

Key Details

  • Who must submit? Almost everyone, including adults, children, and infants (parents/guardians declare on behalf of minors). Limited exceptions apply for paper-based declarations.
  • When? No more than 24 hours before departure from the country you’re travelling from.
  • What do you declare? Goods, currency, personal items, and (where applicable) vehicles. There are duty-free allowances (e.g., goods up to certain values), but you must declare items exceeding them or restricted goods.

How to Submit the Declaration

  1. Go to the SARS Traveller Management System: https://tools.sars.gov.za/sarsonlinequery/traveller
  2. Or download the SATMS mobile app from your app store.
  3. Or use QR codes / self-service kiosks at ports (where available).

You’ll need your passport/travel document details, travel itinerary, and details of any goods/currency to declare. After submission, you’ll receive a confirmation (email or reference) to present or access at the border.

SARS has a helpful step-by-step video here: YouTube – South African Online Traveller Management System.

Tip: Complete it in advance to avoid delays at borders/airports. If you’re travelling soon, do it now (as long as it’s within the 24-hour window for your trip).
