The Himalaya Hotel in Durban (also referred to as the old Himalaya Hotel) is a historic venue from the mid-20th century, particularly popular in the 1960s. It was located on the corner of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street (formerly Grey Street) and Beatrice Street in Durban Central (Greyville/Casbah area), KwaZulu-Natal.

History and Significance

It operated as a luxury hotel known for:

  • Fine cuisine
  • Entertainment
  • Weddings
  • Private parties
  • Banquets

The resident Blue Ricks Band (including members like Lionel Peters, Henry Paul, Morris Joseph, Brian Pillai, Ricky and Danny Pillay) played regular gigs, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, which were often sellouts. It also featured a nightclub (sometimes called the Kilimanjaro Nightclub) and hosted bands like The Flames. The hotel sat next to the Shah Jehan Cinema (owned by the Rajab family), making it part of a lively entertainment hub in the Grey Street area. Many Durban locals recall it fondly for dances, matinees, and social events.

The building was managed for years by Mike and Peggy Jameson (with Mr. Jameson remembered as quite strict by some former patrons and staff).
