Porky is a juvenile southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) who became a local celebrity on South Africa’s KZN South Coast recently.
Quick Facts on Porky
- Origin: He likely traveled thousands of kilometers from subantarctic waters near Marion Island in the Southern Ocean.
- Appearance: As a young male, he was in good body condition (nice and round/chubby), which earned him the affectionate nickname “Porky”.
- Why he came ashore: Juvenile elephant seals sometimes wander far off course during migrations or due to ocean currents. He hauled out near Port Shepstone on the KZN South Coast.
What Happened
Public excitement and beach activity disturbed him while he was trying to rest, so marine authorities stepped in:
- He was moved to uShaka Marine World (linked to SAAMBR) for monitoring and care.
- He received standard veterinary checks and a precautionary rabies vaccination (important due to recent concerns with marine mammals in SA).
- After a short rehab period, he was transported to the Eastern Cape (Gqeberha area) for release on a quieter beach, with help from Bayworld and seal expert Dr. Greg Hofmeyr.
He was fitted with flipper tags for future tracking and wasted no time heading straight back into the ocean upon release. Great news — he’s back adventuring!
About Southern Elephant Seals
These are the largest seals in the world (males can reach 4–5+ meters and several tons as adults). They’re incredible divers, reaching depths over 1,000–2,000 meters, and make epic migrations. Sightings this far north (KZN) are rare but exciting.
If you’re in the Durban/KZN area and spot marine wildlife, give it plenty of space, keep dogs away, and contact the KZN Marine Stranding Network or NSRI if it looks stranded or in distress.
