Originally a prestigious public space for white residents
It became a hub for sports and leisure. By the 1980s, it experienced “greying” due to racial integration and the Group Areas Act, and later declined into an unsafe, crime-ridden area occupied by the homeless. Efforts are now underway to restore its former glory.
