THE South African government continues to receive anti-tuberculosis drugs, having recently received another 3.5 million doses. According to eNCA, South Africa has received Biogenesis Bago vaccines, bringing the total to 13.5 million.
The delivery of the drugs comes after a court ruling ordered the Minister of Agriculture, Mr John Steenhuisen, to allow farmers and livestock owners to purchase the drugs themselves, without having to wait for the government.
A group of farmers and livestock owners took them to court after the minister banned the sale of anti-tuberculosis drugs. The minister wanted the drugs to be made a government program.
The agriculture committee in Parliament recently expressed concern over the slow pace of the distribution of the drugs. According to a report by the Department of Agriculture, an estimated 2 034 livestock have been affected by the disease.
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Mrs. Dina Pule, says that the committee is still awaiting a full report on the progress of the distribution of the vaccines, and ensuring that the spread of the disease is avoided.
