Five full crates of eggs for man of the match

A footballer in Zambia went viral after being given five crates of eggs as his Man of the Match award.

The player is Kennedy Musonda, a forward for Power Dynamos in the Zambian Super League. In the Kitwe Derby against rivals Nkana, he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory and was named Man of the Match.

Instead of cash, a trophy, or some sponsor gadget, he was awarded five full crates of eggs (roughly 150 eggs). Reports suggest some crates were for the winning goal and others for the MoM honour. Photos of him carrying the crates home through the streets blew up online.

Why it went viral

  • It’s hilariously practical — eggs are valuable, nutritious, and probably more useful than a cheap plaque in lower-tier or community-level football.
  • It highlights how rewards in African leagues (and many others) can be very local and sponsor-driven. Sponsors often give products they deal in (eggs, chickens, maize, etc.).
  • The image of a player proudly hauling crates of eggs is pure meme material.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened in Zambia — similar quirky prizes pop up from time to time — but this round has been doing the rounds again recently.

Football really is the same everywhere: you grind for 90 minutes, and sometimes you just get eggs for your troubles. What a legend Musonda — hope he made a good omelette! 🥚⚽
