He was hit in the abdomen (reports mention one or two bullets, with 9mm cartridge casings recovered). A passerby found him conscious next to his gray Suzuki Baleno and alerted help

  • Medical Status: He was rushed to Netcare Milpark Hospital, underwent emergency surgery, and has been in critical but stable condition. As of 1 July updates at the Madlanga Commission, he was unconscious, sedated, and unable to give instructions to his legal team.
  • Timing and Context: This occurred just days before his scheduled appearance (originally around 1 July) at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating police corruption, drug-related matters, illicit precious metals trade, and related issues. Khan is a suspended senior Crime Intelligence official and has been positioned as a significant witness. His legal team had sought in-camera (closed) testimony due to the sensitive nature of his evidence.

Investigation

  • Police (including Gauteng Hawks) are treating it as an attempted assassination. A white Mercedes-Benz is mentioned as the suspects’ vehicle. A handwritten note (naming senior colleagues and calling for investigations) and an HP laptop were reportedly found in his car.
  • No arrests have been publicly confirmed yet. SAPS has vowed a high-level probe.

Additional Developments

  • The Commission heard updates on his condition and has postponed related proceedings. There have also been reports of suspicious individuals (claiming to be from police task teams or the Commission) trying to access him or his records at the hospital, which the Commission has denied authorizing.
