Mr Mozzies (also known as Argyle Butchery) was a long-standing iconic Durban butchery and smokehouse that closed permanently in early September 2026 after nearly six decades of operation.
Key details
- Location: Corner of Argyle Road and Stamford Hill Road (now Mathews Meyiwa Road / 143 Mathews Meyiwa Rd), Greyville / Berea, Durban. It was a familiar landmark at that busy intersection.
- History: Established in the late 1960s. It became a multi-generational Durban institution known for quality fresh meats, an extensive range of cold meats and sausages (over 150 varieties), smoked products, bacon, pâté, salami, air-dried meats, biltong, roasted eisbeins, and seasonal favourites like Christmas hams. Customers often mentioned the friendly long-serving staff and the place as a regular lunch or shopping stop.
- Closure: The Argyle Road store’s final day of trading was around late August / 1–4 September 2026. Local reports and social media described it as the end of a historic Durban institution, with many customers expressing sadness and nostalgia. Pre-packaged Mr Mozzies products continue to be available at Spar, Food Lovers Market, Checkers and similar retailers in KZN.
- Other presence: There was previously a second retail outlet (La Lucia Mall) and wholesale supply to the hospitality trade. The official site (mrmozzies.com) still promotes the brand’s range of fresh beef, cold meats, sausages, and condiments.
