Mr. Manilal Patel, the founder of the iconic Patels Vegetarian Refreshment Room (also known as Patels Take Away) on Grey Street in Durban’s Casbah, passed away recently at the age of 84.
He was a beloved figure in the Durban community, known for his humble service, delicious vegetarian curries, bunny chows, and other classic Indian dishes that fed generations of locals for decades (the business itself dates back over 100 years). His passing marks the end of an era for one of Durban’s most historic eateries.
Condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him or enjoyed his food. He left behind a rich culinary legacy in KZN. RIP.
