A fantastic achievement for Durban University of Technology. Their team triumphed in the Pacer 27 Invitational, which revived elite match racing in Durban after more than 40 years.

Key Highlights:

  • Event: Pacer 27 Invitational (match racing format) hosted by King Shaka Yacht Club (KSYC) in association with SA Sailing KZN.
  • Dates: 14–15 February 2026.
  • Winners: Team Rapid Reach from DUT, crewed by:
    • Sbonga Sibiya
    • Siphosenkosi Nkwanyana
    • Kwazokuhle Mnyakathisi
    • Snenhlanhla Msani
    • Thulebona Mkhize

The event featured six teams from tertiary institutions, with a focus on developing young sailors aged 18–29. Competitors had a training camp beforehand to prepare for the tactical demands of match racing (one-on-one or team duels), which is quite different from the more common fleet racing in South Africa.

This is not only a sporting win but also a big step for transformation and youth development in sailing, aligning with KSYC’s mission to grow the sport and create opportunities for historically disadvantaged athletes.

Well done to the sailors, coaches, organizers, and everyone involved in bringing high-level match racing back to Durban’s waters! This should inspire more students and young sailors in the region.
