  • Project Scope: This involves upgrading an 11.1 km section of one of South Africa’s busiest freight and commuter routes. It aims to widen the road (from 6 to 10 lanes in parts), improve interchanges, enhance safety, reduce congestion, and better support economic traffic between Durban and the interior.
  • Timeline: Expected to take about 60 months (5 years) to complete.
  • Contract: Managed by SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal office (Contract SANRAL N.003-012-2017/1).
  • Start Date: Work kicked off around 25 June 2026.

What to Expect

Major traffic disruptions are anticipated during construction, so motorists and freight operators should plan alternative routes or allow extra time. SANRAL has advised of lane closures, speed reductions, and other temporary measures.

This project is part of broader upgrades along the N3 corridor (and related N2 work), which are seen as vital for economic growth, job creation, and improving freight efficiency in the region.

If you’re traveling this route soon, check SANRAL’s website, their Stop Over publication, or local traffic apps for real-time updates.
