The days that were

Category: South Beach

During the 1980s, South Beach was at the heart of Durban’s ultimate beachfront holiday era. It was defined by neon-lit nightlife, classic coastal hotels, family beach holidays, and a booming surf scene.

The Golden Era Atmosphere

  • The Hotel Strip: South Beach was famous for its line of beachfront hotels and high-rise apartments. Places like the Lonsdale, the Malibu, the Four Seasons, and the Edward were bustling with domestic holidaymakers, coastal strip pubs, and sunseekers.

  • The Beach & Surf Scene: Long before modern waterfront developments, South Beach was a haven for bodyboarders and surfers. Warm Indian Ocean waters, broad stretches of sand, and active lifeguard posts made it the primary family swimming spot.

  • Classic Beachfront Attractions: Nearby paddling pools, ice cream vendors, salt-water pools, and the iconic rickshaw rides along the parade were daily staples for visitors during peak summer and Easter holidays.

1980s Nightlife & Culture

  • Pubs and Live Venues: The 80s brought a vibrant music and social scene along Marine Parade and Gillespie Street, packed with local bars, dance clubs, and lounges frequented by locals, tourists, and sailors.

  • The Promenade Life: A casual walk down the promenade late into the warm Durban night was standard practice, with neon signs reflecting off the street and ocean air.
