Veldskoene (also called velskoene or colloquially “vellies”) are traditional South African leather walking shoes or light ankle boots with deep roots in indigenous Khoisan footwear, adapted by European settlers, and later influencing global styles such as the Clarks desert boot. They are characterised by soft (often vegetable-tanned or rawhide) leather uppers, a round toe, stitchdown construction without nails or tacks, and a flexible sole. The design prioritises comfort, durability, and suitability for rough terrain.
