Matriculation students from Prince Nomatiyela Secondary have been suspended from school after being accused of using drugs.

Eleven students at the school in Kuvukeni, KwaNongoma, were allegedly found to have eaten space muffins and were unable to attend school, leading to the school board deciding to suspend them.

It is said that the students, who were preparing to write their mid-year exams, staged the act outside the school premises. It is said that 10 of them were unable to walk to school to revise their subjects because they were under the influence of drugs, and one of them finally arrived, but his health is not good as he was vomiting continuously.

“While the suspect was being investigated, some parents came to the school to ask about the incident. That is when the suspect confessed, and he also exposed others who were involved in the incident.

“What is unfortunate is that it turns out that these students are not the first to do this, as they did on another school trip. This act of theirs is tarnishing the good name of this school,” said the source.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson, Mr Muzi Mahlambi, said the department supports the school’s action to suspend these students, as it does not tolerate drugs in schools.
