  • Scale: The solar park includes a 4.9 MW solar PV system (with plans for around 9,000 panels) and battery energy storage (initially around 2 MW, with reports of up to 6 MWh in some updates).
  • Phased Approach: Phase 1 was initiated in 2023. By mid-February 2024, MTN had energized over 50% of the panels (5,418 panels), injecting 700 kW into the site’s microgrid and reducing reliance on the municipal grid by about 40%.
  • Broader Goals: This is part of MTN’s “Project Zero” and net-zero emissions ambitions by 2040. It positions MTN as an Independent Power Producer (IPP) using multiple generation technologies (solar, battery, gas, etc.) for a resilient microgrid, helping mitigate load shedding. Expected annual savings include roughly 9.3 million kWh and a reduction of about 9,672 tons of CO₂.
  • Additional Elements: Rooftop solar, solar carports, and potential ground-mounted facilities on adjacent land. It also supports an “Island Mode” for off-grid operation during outages.

The project aligns with MTN’s sustainability strategy across its operations in South Africa. As of recent reports (including updates into 2025), it continues to progress and serve as a flagship example for their energy transition.
