Bunny Chow is Durban’s iconic street-food dish — a hollowed-out loaf (or quarter/half loaf) of white bread filled with curry. It has nothing to do with rabbits. The name most likely comes from “bania” (a term for Indian merchants/traders), combined with “chow” (slang for food).

It originated in Durban’s Indian community (one of the largest outside India), dating to the 1940s or earlier. Practical origins include portable meals for sugar-cane workers and takeaway options under apartheid-era restrictions that limited who could eat inside restaurants. The bread acts as both bowl and utensil: you tear off pieces to scoop the curry, and the gravy soaks into the soft walls. Classic fillings are mutton/lamb, chicken, beans (sugar beans or butter beans), or mixed vegetables. A “quarter mutton” is the everyday order.
