Thirsty’s Dockside Tavern was one of Durban’s most iconic waterfront venues throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Located right at the harbour entrance, it was famous for its laid-back atmosphere, live music, weekend flea markets, and prime front-row views of cargo ships entering and leaving the port.

Highlights & History

  • Location: Situated at the mouth of the Durban Harbour along Point Road (now Mahatma Gandhi Road). IOL
  • Founder: Established in the 1990s by local businessman Bob Humphreys, who converted a derelict building at the harbour mouth into the legendary watering hole. IOL
  • The Atmosphere: Known for Sunday afternoon drinks, live local bands, seafood, and a lively, relaxed crowd of locals, tourists, and post-marathon runners. Facebook
  • Famous Moments: One of its busiest days occurred in 1997 when the QE2 cruise liner docked in Durban, causing traffic to back up all the way down Point Road as patrons packed the tavern to watch it pass. IOL
  • Closure: Thirsty’s officially closed its doors in January 2007. The building was subsequently demolished as part of the broader port extension project to widen the harbour entrance for modern, larger vessels. Facebook
