This popular Saturday market on Durban’s North Coast (KwaZulu-Natal) is a key community trading spot, especially for fresh produce, goods, and local commerce.

Key Details of the Upgrades

  • Temporary relocation: Since 30 May 2026, traders have moved to Parks Open Field at 1 Edmund Morewood Street, oThongathi. They are expected to operate there for about three months.
  • Trading schedule (unchanged): Saturdays only, from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • Main works include:
    • Removal and safe disposal of the old asbestos roof.
    • Installation of a new roof structure and sheeting.
    • Repairs to rainwater drainage systems.
    • Plumbing upgrades.
    • Painting and general maintenance.

The goal is to create a safer, cleaner, more functional, and modern trading environment for traders and shoppers, while improving the overall appearance and boosting customer confidence.

The eThekwini Municipality has apologised for any inconvenience and asked for patience during the project. Councillor Thembo Ntuli (Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee) highlighted that these changes will benefit the local informal economy and community.

This is a targeted infrastructure upgrade rather than a full redevelopment. For the latest updates, check official eThekwini Municipality sources or local news. If you’re a regular visitor or trader, the temporary site keeps the market accessible during the works.
