Category: Victory lounge

Victory Lounge in Chatsworth is a long-running Indian/halal takeaway and restaurant located in the Chatsworth Centre (also referred to as Chatsworth Shopping Centre), at 17 Joyhurst Street, Chatsworth, Durban 4092 (Shop 88 area in some listings). Phone: 031 403 8071.
It continues the heritage of the original Victory Lounge that opened around 1945–1946 on the corner of Grey and Victoria Streets in Durban’s CBD (the historic “Casbah” area). That original site was a pioneering Moodley family business known for sweetmeats, savouries, cakes, biryani, and early bunny chows (especially meat versions). The Grey Street location closed in June 2018; the Chatsworth outlet carries the name and tradition forward as a more accessible suburban spot for classic Durban Indian fare.
Opening Hours
Listings show typical daytime hours suited to a shopping-centre takeaway (confirm by phone, as they can vary):

Monday–Thursday / Saturday: roughly 08:00–17:15
Friday: 08:00–18:00
Sunday: 09:00–17:00

Older EatOut listings noted similar times (Saturday–Thursday 8am–5pm, Fridays to 6pm). It is primarily a lunch and early-afternoon destination rather than an evening restaurant.
What to Expect

Cuisine: Strictly halaal Indian food with a strong focus on Durban-style curries and bunny chows (hollowed-out white bread filled with curry). Common options include mutton, bean (sugar beans or broad beans), and other curries, plus savouries, sweetmeats, and related dishes.
Style: Casual takeaway with some seating. It is a practical, high-volume spot rather than a fine-dining experience. Facilities historically noted include takeaways, parking, wheelchair access, and child-friendliness. No alcohol.
Heritage angle: Part of the broader Victory Lounge lineage that helped popularise bunny chow in the Grey Street era. A related (but separate) business called New Victory Foods in Phoenix has won recent bunny-chow competitions and has family ties to people who previously worked at the Chatsworth Victory Lounge.
