A new Aliwal Shoal Leadership Programme is empowering young adults on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to protect one of South Africa’s most iconic Marine Protected Areas.

Led by marine scientist Dr Michelle Carpenter, and supported by the Rufford Foundation and Wild Alliance Africa, the programme gives local participants (currently 13 strong!) real-world exposure to marine science, citizen science, environmental education, and ocean advocacy — no degree required.

From the world-famous reefs of Aliwal Shoal — just 5 km offshore from Umkomaas — these young leaders are stepping up to ensure this biodiversity hotspot thrives for generations to come. 🦈🐠

Huge congratulations to all the participants and the team making this happen!

New Aliwal Shoal Leadership Programme Builds Local Ocean Guardians

Umkomaas, KZN South Coast — A groundbreaking new initiative is strengthening conservation capacity at the Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area by equipping local young adults with essential marine leadership skills.

Created and led by renowned marine scientist Dr Michelle Carpenter, with funding from the Rufford Foundation and administrative support from Wild Alliance Africa, the Aliwal Shoal Leadership Programme provides participants with practical training in marine science, citizen science, environmental education, and ocean advocacy.

Currently supporting 13 participants from surrounding communities (following overwhelming interest beyond the initial five funded placements), the programme aims to develop the next generation of local stewards dedicated to the long-term protection of this world-renowned shark-diving and reef ecosystem.
