The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is allocating R42 million toward Phase 2 of the Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS) Technologies Project within the eThekwini Municipality.
eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele is set to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and its Water Partnership Office (WPO). Under this partnership, the DBSA WPO will oversee procurement, supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of off-grid sanitation systems before formally handing them over to municipal management.
The new funding expands upon Phase 1, which successfully piloted “Reinvented Toilet” technologies in communities such as Pholani, Kuthuleni, and Malacca Road. These off-grid systems treat wastewater locally, recycle flush water, and operate independent of main sewer lines.
Phase 2 will scale up these sustainable sanitation solutions across 11 designated sites, including Emona, Shewula, Drift Road, Rainbow Ridge, Klaarwater camp, Craigieburn, and Lotus Park. The municipality’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will provide strategic oversight throughout the implementation to ensure all standards are met.
