A suspect wanted in connection with the October 2021 Sydenham mass shooting in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa—which left nine people dead—was arrested nearly five years later in Melmoth.
KwaZulu-Natal Murder and Robbery Unit detectives arrested the man on Wednesday night (around 23–24 September 2026) in the Obuka area of Melmoth, where he had been in hiding. He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 September 2026, facing multiple counts of murder. Police have not publicly released his name.
Details of the 2021 incident
On 16 October 2021, nine people were killed in related shootings in the Palmiet Road Informal Settlement area of Sydenham (sometimes linked in contemporary reporting to nearby Clare Estate), Durban:
- Six people were shot and killed at a house (accounts from the time noted a group that included adults and two children among the victims in the main incident).
- A short distance away, three more people were killed in two separate incidents the same day.
Police determined the killings were committed by the same suspects and referred the case to the specialised Murder and Robbery Unit. Two suspects were identified during the investigation.
One of those suspects was later traced to Empangeni. He resisted arrest and was fatally wounded in a shootout with police. The second suspect remained at large for years until the recent breakthrough. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda described the second man as “elusive,” noting that “relentless police efforts” eventually led detectives to his hiding place in Melmoth, where he was “cornered and arrested.”
