Announced as part of an accelerated rollout to cut waiting lists, the AI feature aims to get patients to the right care on their first attempt, reducing unnecessary pressure on General Practitioners (GPs) and Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments.

Key Features of the AI Triage Tool

  • Dynamic Symptom Questions: Adapts questions based on real-time user responses to gather highly specific details about a patient’s condition.
  • Smart Routing: Directs patients automatically to the most appropriate pathway, including GP appointments, pharmacies, A&E, community services, or self-care advice.
  • Rollout Timeline: Reaching more than 200,000 patients within the next 12 months, with a full rollout to all NHS App users completed by April 2028.

Accompanying Patient Features

The upgrade is tied to a larger £10 billion tech overhaul aligned with the government’s 10-Year Health Plan:

  • My Companion: An AI assistant designed to help patients articulate their health preferences, ensuring they can actively participate in clinical conversations.
  • My Choices: A feature allowing patients to view and compare data on local service wait times, patient satisfaction, and healthcare outcomes to make informed care choices.
