Newton’s Paddling Ponds: Situated right on the beachfront promenade (Lower Marine Parade), these shallow pools were a centerpiece of Durban’s family leisure area. Upgraded in major beachfront redevelopments during the 1950s, the precinct featured separate shallow pools for toddlers, a main paddling area with decorative fountains, water slides, and an adjacent mini boat-ride pond complete with a semi-circular tunnel.
Wedge Beach: Positioned in the foreground/mid-ground, Wedge Beach lies just south of North Beach and the New Pier. Historically and today, it remains one of Durban’s prime surfing and bodyboarding breaks along the Golden Mile.
South Beach Coastline: Behind the paddling ponds, Lower Marine Parade carried one-way traffic with diagonal parking overlooking the surf. Sunbathers and holidaymakers frequented the open lawns, stone-and-wood sheltered benches, and adjacent promenade walkways.
XL Restaurant & Surrounding Landmarks: Looming in the background were the iconic high-rise flats, coastal hotels, and beachfront eateries (including the XL Restaurant building, the Parade Hotel, and nearby residential blocks) that defined Marine Parade’s mid-century skyline.
